Canva vs best-in-slot
Canva Grow generates ads, writes a copy draft, builds the campaign and publishes to Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn. best-in-slot does one network properly and no design at all. Nine differences, checked against Canva's own help centre.
How this was put together
We make best-in-slot, and best-in-slot is one of the options here — so read this the way you would read any comparison written by one of the sides. What we can do about that is show our working: every claim about Canva is footnoted to the public page it came from — pricing, docs, help centre — all read on August 18, 2026, and quoted rather than characterised wherever the wording matters. Where we could not verify something, the page says so instead of guessing.
Canva is a real product aimed at a different job, and there is a row below where it plainly beats us. If we have a detail wrong or stale — including if you work there — [email protected] and it gets fixed.
Canva, in their words
“Power your performance marketing with all the tools you need in one ad management platform.”1
best-in-slot, in ours
“Ads in a click. Instagram on autopilot.”
This is the closest comparison on the site, and the one where we concede the most. Canva Grow — the ads surface Canva relaunched in June 2026 — reads your website, shows you a business and product profile to check, offers three ad concepts, generates image or video-avatar ads from the one you pick, drafts the ad copy with a Generate button, then publishes into Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn, creating the campaign and ad set in the flow if you need them, up to fifty ads a submission, paused by default.
That is not a design tool with an ad feature bolted on any more. It is an ad platform with the best editor in the category attached to it, on a plan that costs $180 a year.
So the honest question is not “which is better” but “what is left”. Three things, and they are narrow. best-in-slot builds one Meta ad that carries all four shapes with placement rules attached, rather than one design per ad. It inherits the page, Instagram account, destination and call-to-action from the ads already in your ad set, so there is no publish form to fill in. And it is metered per action — ten credits for a finished ad — rather than out of a monthly AI allowance that editing also draws from.
If you already use Canva, none of that is likely to be worth a second subscription, and this page will say so again at the end. If you have never opened Canva and do not want to, that is a different question, and the last row is the one to read.
The nine differences
Numbered markers link to the Canva page each claim came from. Everything in the best-in-slot column is what the product does today — the same figures the pricing page and the FAQ are built from.
| The difference | Canva | best-in-slot |
|---|---|---|
| What you have to typeIs a prompt or a brief required before you get anything?Much the same | Their help centre says context can be a website URL, a description of your business, product photos or your own assets. Then two review gates before any pixel: you check the extracted business and product information, and you choose one of three ad concepts. Their AI-ad-generator marketing page describes the input differently, as dropping in a prompt.2,14 | A link to your site, once, and one review screen — then a click. There is no prompt field anywhere in the flow, and no choice to make between image and video because there is only one answer. |
| Both tools show you what they learned and let you fix it before generating, which is the right design. Canva's flow has more decisions in it; whether that is friction or control depends on how much you want to steer. | ||
| Website understandingDoes it read your site, and what does it keep from it?Much the same | Grow builds a business and product profile from your URL for you to review, and Canva's newsroom says it pulls business information, product visuals, brand colours and audience signals. The persistent piece is separate: Brand Kit Builder “extracts logos, colors, and public fonts from a website or PDF”, with brand voice coming from the PDF path rather than the URL. Their own docs are unusually candid about failure — some images “may not be extracted or used”, generated designs “may use AI-generated or stock images instead”, and this “can particularly affect visual and product-led brands”.2,7,8,15 | It maps the site, reads up to fifty pages, and writes one business summary plus audience profiles and what each one needs — then keeps them as the brand, so every ad afterwards is conditioned on them. Colours and a one-line identity come from screenshots of your own pages. It does not read fonts. |
| Canva reads your fonts and we do not. We read more of the site and keep audiences as objects you can pick an ad's angle for. Neither is obviously deeper; they are aimed at different halves of the same problem. | ||
| Concept, image and copyDoes one run produce an argument, a picture and the words? | Three concepts to choose between, then image ads or video-avatar ads generated from the one you picked, with text rendered into the design. Ad copy is drafted at publish time — “You can write your ad copy manually or select Generate to create a first draft using AI” — covering ad name, primary text, headline, description, call to action and website URL. How many ads come back per concept is not documented.2,3 | Three concepts a run, argued against an angle you pick from 117 in 10 families. Then the image in one of 66 styles. Then up to five primary texts, five headlines and a description — variants, not one draft — written from the image just generated, and attached to the ad automatically. |
| The gap here narrowed a lot in 2026: Canva writes ad copy now. What is still different is quantity and provenance — five texts and five headlines, written from the image that was just drawn, rather than one draft per field. | ||
| Static or videoWhat shapes come out, and for which placements?Their edge | Image ads and video-avatar ads, the latter on Canva's top “Ultra AI” tier — which Canva Free has no access to at all. Duration and resolution for Grow's avatar videos are not published anywhere we could find. Outside Grow you have the whole design suite, every social size, and a video editor.2,9 | Still images only. One hero image re-rendered into 1080×1080, 1080×1350, 1080×1920 and 1200×628 — rebuilt for each shape rather than cropped — and packed into a single ad with each shape routed to the placements it fits. |
| Editing controlWhat can you change after it has generated?Their edge | The best in this comparison and not by a little. Generated ads open in the Canva editor, and Magic Layers turns a flat image into editable layers — move, delete, resize, replace elements, apply effects per layer — inside a suite with fonts, animation, video and collaboration. Documented limits: it “works best with graphic designs, illustrations, and stylized visuals”, photo-realistic images “may not separate as cleanly”, PNG and JPG only, single page, nothing over 5000px. Magic Layers is itself a Premium AI tool, so editing spends the same allowance as generating.5,9 | Describe a change in a sentence and the image re-renders for 3 credits, keeping the original. Generate as many takes in as many styles as you like. Copy is editable line by line. No canvas, no layers, no fonts, no way to move an element by hand. |
| Getting it into the ad accountDoes the finished ad reach Ads Manager, or a download folder?Different jobs | A real publishing pipeline. Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn; you can add to an existing campaign or create a new one during publishing, and the same for ad sets; up to fifty ads in one submission; and “By default, ads are submitted as paused.” The publish form takes the design, ad name, primary text, headline, description, call to action and website URL — with the copy fields drafting themselves if you ask. Connecting Meta needs Admin access in Business Manager.3,4,13 | Meta only, and one ad at a time — but that ad carries all four shapes and every copy line as one placement-customised creative, so stories and reels get the tall one, feeds get square and portrait, and right column gets the wide one. It never creates campaigns or ad sets. It inherits the page, Instagram account, destination and call-to-action from the ads already in your ad set, so there is nothing to fill in, and it lands paused with a link to review it in Ads Manager. |
| Their reach is wider and their batch is bigger. Ours is one network, one ad, but shaped the way Meta serves ads — four assets with placement rules inside a single ad, rather than one design per ad. Note that Canva has two publishing routes: Grow's Launch module, described above, and an older share-to-Meta shortcut in the editor that only publishes into a campaign and ad set you already have. | ||
| Brand controlsHow does it know your logo, colours and voice — and how many brands?Their edge | The deepest brand kit here: logos, colours, fonts, brand voice with tone guidelines and sample taglines, photos, and other asset categories. Free includes one kit with three colours, Pro five, Business a hundred. On-brand generation is opt-in — you select Apply Brand and pick a kit — and enforcement, Brand Controls and approvals, lands on Business and Enterprise. Whether Grow's ad generation applies your Brand Kit is not stated in its documentation.6,8,10 | Colours with roles, a one-line identity, the business summary, audiences and products — injected into every generation as context rather than applied afterwards, with no opt-in step. Your logo goes to the image model as a reference to reproduce, so it is faithful rather than pixel-exact. No fonts, no tone-of-voice document. Brands are one, five or ten by plan. |
| Their kit holds more and their editor can enforce it exactly. Ours is always on but shallower, and the logo is drawn rather than placed — which is the honest limit of generating an image instead of composing one. | ||
| Pricing and limitsWhat does a month cost, and what does that buy in finished ads?Much the same | Published annually: $0 Free, $180 a year for one person on Pro, $250 a year per person on Business. Monthly figures render client-side, so we are not quoting one. The meter is a monthly AI allowance in three tiers — Pro is up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses — and it is per member, never pooled. Grow's ad creation counts as Premium; video-avatar ads use Ultra. Running out of Standard or Premium means “short pauses between generations”; running out of Ultra means it is gone until the reset. Heavy use has its own answer: AI Pass, “USD $100 globally per person, per month”, which is more than six times the Pro subscription. Subscriptions are, in most cases, not refundable.9,10,11,12 | $19–$169 a month, one credit meter, no seats and no per-member allowance. A finished ad is 10 credits; concepts 1, an image 3, the four sizes 6, copy 2 — each printed on the pricing page. 50 free credits at signup, about 5 ads, no card. Failed generations refund automatically. |
| We cannot honestly compute Canva's cost per finished ad, because how many ads one Premium use produces is not published. Two things are comparable: their allowance is spent by editing as well as generating, and it does not pool across a team. | ||
| Who it fitsWho is genuinely better off with this one?Different jobs | A marketing team that already designs in Canva — the brand kits, templates and files are the moat — and increasingly a paid-social team that wants creation, publishing and performance in one place. The optimisation layer, ad tagging and brand controls, lands on Business. Grow 2.0 rolled out to North America, Australia and the UK first, and Canva's own pages disagree about how much of it Free accounts get.1,10,14,16 | Someone who does not want to open a design tool at all, runs Meta, and wants a finished ad — image, four shapes, five headlines — published into an ad set with nothing to fill in. Small teams and agencies on the plans carrying five or ten brands. |
Our side of the table in full: every credit price, what happens in your Meta account, and the rules we wrote about comparison ads — which is why there is a row above where Canva wins.
Stay with Canva if…
You already use Canva. That is most of the decision and it should be. Your brand kits, templates, files and team are there; Grow adds concepts, publishing to three networks and a performance view that reads your connected account back to you; and the whole thing rides on a subscription you are already paying. Buying a second tool to save filling in a form is a bad trade for a team whose design work already lives in one place.
You want to be able to fix the ad by hand. Magic Layers turns a generated image into real layers inside a full design and video suite. Our answer to a wrong image is to describe the change and re-render, or generate another and pick. If “nearly right, let me move that” is how you work, there is no contest.
And you may need more than Meta. Canva publishes to TikTok and LinkedIn as well, with campaign types documented for each, and will create the campaign and ad set while it publishes. We do Meta, we publish one ad at a time, and we never create a campaign or an ad set at all.
Try best-in-slot if…
You want the ad shaped the way Meta serves ads. One best-in-slot ad carries four images and every copy line as a single placement-customised creative — the tall one goes to stories and reels, the wide one to right column — where Canva's documented publish flow attaches one design to an ad. That is a Meta-specific piece of assembly, and it is most of what we do that a design tool does not.
You want nothing to fill in. Publishing into an ad set that already holds an ad inherits its page, Instagram account, destination URL and call-to-action, and the copy is already written from the image. There is no publish form, no CTA dropdown, no draft to approve.
And you want a meter that maps to output rather than to usage. 10 credits is a finished ad; editing an image is 3; every price is on the pricing page, credits do not have to be shared with the rest of a design suite, and there is no per-seat allowance to run out of halfway through a Tuesday.
If none of those three describe a problem you have, keep Canva. Genuinely — it is a better product for most of what most teams do, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise to sell a $19 subscription.
What changes if you move across
For most Canva users this is not a switch, it is an addition — or nothing at all. Canva keeps doing brand assets, organic social and anything that needs a canvas; best-in-slot produces paid Meta statics and publishes them. Nothing overlaps at the file level.
Setup here is one link and one review screen, and no brand kit to assemble: the business summary, the audiences and the colours are written for you to correct. A logo upload is one field. Product photos are worth adding — they are passed to the image model as high-fidelity references, so the product in the ad is your product rather than something similar to it.
The difference you will feel first is the absence of the editor. There is no canvas here and no fonts; a wrong image gets a sentence describing the fix, or another take. For some people that is the whole appeal and for others it is disqualifying, and it is worth knowing which you are before you move anything.
Canva vs best-in-slot: common questions
Can Canva create the campaign and ad set, or only the creative?
Both, through Grow's Launch module: when publishing you can add to an existing campaign, create a new one, or duplicate a previous one, and the same three options apply to ad sets. Canva's other route — sharing a design straight to Meta Ads from the editor — still only publishes into structure you already have, and its help article says to create a new campaign in Ads Manager. Two surfaces, two behaviours, both live. best-in-slot deliberately never creates campaigns or ad sets; it publishes one ad into an ad set you already own.
Does Canva write the ad copy?
Yes. At the publish step you can “write your ad copy manually or select Generate to create a first draft using AI”, covering the ad name, primary text, headline, description, call to action and website URL. best-in-slot writes up to five primary texts and five headlines plus a description earlier — from the image it just generated — and attaches them to the published ad.
Do Canva's ads go live immediately?
No. Canva's Launch documentation says ads are submitted as paused by default, created on the platform but not running until you activate them. best-in-slot behaves the same way: paused by default, with going live an explicit choice at publish time.
Is the Canva AI ad generator free?
Partly, and Canva's own pages disagree about how much. The pricing table marks publishing to ad platforms as included on all plans including Free, while the AI ad generator page says access is limited for free accounts. What is mechanically clear: Grow's ad creation counts as a Premium AI use — 20 a month on Free, 200 on Pro — and video-avatar ads need the Ultra tier, which Free does not have. best-in-slot gives new accounts 50 credits, about 5 finished ads, no card.
Why would anyone add best-in-slot if they already have Canva?
Three reasons and no more: one Meta ad carrying all four shapes with placement rules attached rather than one design per ad; publishing that inherits the page, destination and call-to-action from your existing ads so there is no form to complete; and a per-action credit price instead of a shared monthly AI allowance that editing also draws down. If none of those is a problem you have, keep Canva.
